How to convert an image to ASCII art
ANTseeConvert is an image to ASCII converter. Upload a picture and it is redrawn as text: dark areas become dense characters, light areas become spaces or thin marks. Said quickly, the name is the job.
- 01Upload an image by clicking the box, dropping a file on it, or pasting a screenshot with Ctrl+V or ⌘V.
- 02Choose black and white, inverted, or color. Letters are for pasting. Half-blocks keep more of a color photo.
- 03Set the width. About 80 columns fits a README or a chat message. A portrait usually wants 100 or more.
- 04Copy the text, or save TXT, PNG, or HTML. Those buttons sit on the picture.
Photo to ASCII, picture to ASCII
A photo with a clear subject and a plain background stays recognizable. Busy scenes turn to noise, especially under 80 columns. Silhouettes, logos, and high-contrast portraits make the sharpest text art.
JPG to ASCII, PNG to ASCII, and the other formats
- JPG, PNG, WebP, SVG
- The whole image is sampled.
- GIF
- The first frame becomes the plate.
- Paste
- A copied screenshot works the same as a file.
Black and white, color, and half-blocks
Black and white is ink on paper. Inverted is the same picture knocked out for a dark terminal. Color keeps the photograph’s hues on each character. Letters use one keyboard character per cell. Half-blocks stack two samples in one character, so a color picture stays closer to itself.
Copy gives plain text, which is what you paste into a comment or a README. Save HTML when the color has to travel with the letters. A PNG is the right file when the art is wider than the place you wanted to paste it.
Questions about image to ASCII
How do I convert an image to ASCII art?
Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or SVG onto the studio, or paste a screenshot. ANTseeConvert samples the picture into a grid and replaces each cell with a character whose density matches its brightness. Set the width, choose black and white or color, then copy the result or download it.
What is an ASCII art generator?
An ASCII art generator turns a picture into text art: an image drawn with letters, numbers, and punctuation. ANTseeConvert converts a photo you already have. It does not draw banner letters from a typed word.
Can I make black and white or color ASCII art?
Yes. Black and white uses dark characters on a light ground, like ink on paper. Inverted flips the tones for terminals and dark pages. Color tints each character from the photo. Half-blocks carry two samples in one cell, which keeps more of a color picture.
Does this upload my image?
No. The file is read in your browser and is never sent to the server. ANTseeConvert only delivers this page. There is no account and no cookie.
How wide should the ASCII art be?
About 80 columns fits a README code block or a chat message. A portrait usually wants 100 to 140. Wider grids keep more detail and are better saved as a PNG than pasted into a message.
Can I copy and paste the ASCII art?
Yes. Copy puts the characters on your clipboard. You can also save a .txt file, a PNG, or HTML when the color has to stay with the letters.
What is the difference between letters and half-blocks?
Letters place one keyboard character in each cell, chosen by brightness. Half-blocks stack two samples in one character, so a color photo stays closer to itself. Use letters when you want text you can paste. Use half-blocks when you want the picture.
Why does my ASCII art look flat?
Increase the width, or switch the character set to detailed or blocks. A clear subject on a plain background stays easier to read than a busy scene.
